Data Shadows – Exteriors
Over the course of the past three years I have traveled extensively to photograph every Google Data Center in the United States and Europe, the largest data facilities of Apple and Facebook, as well as Microsoft, Dell, Yahoo and others. The resulting subset of imagery of data center exteriors hint at the environmental costs of powering these machines, and accentuate the barriers separating the public from its data. The combination of exterior and interior imagery (see the installation and interiors links below) allows me to juxtapose the enormous, yet unremarkable architectural structures alongside the brightly colored, frenzied technology within, pointing to the complexity of activities taking place inside these deceptively minimal and inaccessible compounds.
